Connections - Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) Creating a new Internet connection: Dialup To create an Internet connection in Mac OS X, do the following: On the Toolbar, click the Apple icon and select Location -> Network Preferences from the menus.
The System Preferences window appears. Location = Click the Down arrow and select New Location from the menu.
The following window appears: Name your new location = Give the new connection a name. Click the OK button.
We return to the previous window. Show = Ensure you select Internal Modem from the menu. PPP tab: Service Provider = DSLExtreme Account Name = username Password = Enter the password of Important: Passwords are case-sensitive. Ensure your Caps Lock key is DISabled. Telephone Number = Enter the access number you use to connect to DSLExtreme. Check the box Save password. Click the PPP Options button.
The following window appears: Session Options: If you'd like to use a browser, e-mail client, ftp client, etc. to connect to the Internet, check the box Connect automatically when needed. Enable any other Session Options to your liking. Advanced Options: Ensure you check Send PPP echo packets Ensure you check Use TCP header compression. You can leave all other Advanced Options Disabled. Click the OK button.
Select the TCP/IP tab. Configure IPv4 = Ensure you select Using PPP from the menu. DNS Servers = This is optional. It's best just to leave this section blank.
Select the Proxies tab. If your using a proxy server for filtering or browsing acceleration, you should have the following: Select a proxy server to configure: Check the option Web Proxy (HTTP). Web Proxy Server: The fields follow this format: Address:Port Address = Enter the address of the proxy server. Port = Enter the port number you use to access the proxy server. Note: If you're using filtering and do not want anyone to make changes to the proxy, you can lock the proxy settings by closing the lock in the bottom, left-hand corner. The only way to disable the lock is by entering the administrator password.
Select the Modem tab. Modem = Ensure you select the proper modem from the menu. Mac should do this automatically. Check the option Enable error correction and compression in modem. Check the option Wait for dial tone before dialing. Dialing = Select the type of dial tone you have — Tone or Pulse. Sound = If you'd like to hear the modem dial, select the option On. If you'd like to verify if the modem is dialing, select the option Show modem status in menu bar. On the Finder toolbar in the top-right corner of your Desktop, you'll see an animated phone as you dial.
