V92: What is V.92, and what are its related features?

V.92 is a new standard for dial-up communications that offers several important improvements over the existing V.90 standard. These improvements are intended to make Internet communications faster, easier and more enjoyable. V.92 expands upon the V.90 protocol and offers new features that will broaden the narrowband users’ Internet experience. The new V.92 modems provide the following features that DSLExtreme is supporting:
  • Modem-on-Hold
The Modem-On-Hold (MOH) feature, by working in conjunction with the Call Waiting service provided by the telephone service provider, allows the modem to stay connected or “on hold” with the Internet for up to three minutes while you either receive an incoming Call Waiting call or initiate an outgoing voice call. You must subscribe to your telephone service provider’s Call Waiting service in order to utilize MOH and may have to configure your V.92-capable modem to support this feature. If you subscribe to both Call Waiting and Caller ID voice line services, you may have the option of viewing the Caller ID information displayed on the computer screen.
When your connection to the Internet is “on hold” while you place or receive a phone call, you will not be able to surf while on the phone. Your connection though is quickly and automatically resumed.
Each time you log in to DSLExtreme, the MOH timers are started over at zero. Once you place your Internet session on hold, there is a time limit of three minutes. After your Internet session is on hold for three minutes, your Internet session will drop. To re-access your DSLExtreme account after the Internet session is terminated, you will have to re-dial and log in again.
Some modems offer outbound-calling MOH. This feature allows you to place your Internet session on hold while you make an outbound voice call.
Note: Not all modems support this feature with V.34 modulation. You may need to set your modem to enable MOH.
  • Quick Connect
Quick Connect learns about the connection between your modem, the phone company (local phone lines), and DSLExtreme. It then uses this information to optimize the next connection and will help you get online faster. Quick Connect remembers your line conditions from your previous DSLExtreme session and bypasses portions of the modem training sequence. Quick Connect will help only if you dial from the same PC, modem and phone line to the same DSLExtreme access number.
Note:
    1. You may need to set your modem to enable Quick Connect.
    2. Not all modems support this feature.
    3. The basic requirements for getting a high-speed downstream connection remain the same as for V.90. You probably will not see any improvement in your ability to make a high-speed connection.
    4. QC will only quicken a connection that is made using V.90. V.34+ connections cannot be made faster.
  • V.44 Compression
V.44 is the new data compression standard from the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). V.44 improves on the older V.42 standard and is optimized for file types prevalent with Internet usage including HTML text on WebPages, some graphics and portable document format (PDF) files. As a result, Web browsing can be faster and some documents will load more quickly. E-mail and ASCII type text files may show more modest improvement. Files that are already compressed, such as JPEG and ZIP, may not show improvement at all with V.44.

Please note that not all V.92 capable modems offer V.44 compression. If your modem does support V.44 compression, you may need to set your modem to enable it. Please contact your modem manufacturer for instructions.
