How to Power Cycle your Equipment
To power cycle your equipment, the goal is to fully turn off the equipment(s) for a few moments and then turn it back on. This guide will go step by step on how to power cycle your equipment.
- Go to your equipment
- Depending on the equipment, there might be a power button on the back of the device. If there is no power switch, then you will need to unplug the power cord from the back of the modem. If this is a computer, simply shut it down.
It is recommended to try to power cycle the equipment of the following order:
- Modem
- Router (if you have one)
- Computer
- Afterward, let the modem “rest” for about 30 seconds* and then turn the devices on.
- Wait for the lights to stop flashing. Usually takes about a minute.
Power cycling your modem, router and computer can fix many connection problems. ADSL modems are very sensitive to electro magnetic fields and electronic interference, hence on why power cycling the equipment can often resolve some problems which is the reason why this is the first step in troubleshooting almost all connection issues. *30 seconds is the usual recommended amount of time to leave the equipment off.
