Windows 7 Static IP Connection

A Static IP DSL account is much different than Dynamic IP (PPPoE or DHCP) DSL account. With a static IP you always have the same IP address. This means that the numeric value that identifies your computer on the internet (the IP address) does not change, as opposed to a dynamic IP which changes every time you log on to the internet. Since your IP address is fixed, setup for this type of account is different than a dynamic IP. Follow the directions below to setup Windows 7 for a Static IP DSL account.

1. Begin by opening the Windows 7 Control Panel. Click the Start orb, then select Control Panel. Make sure View By: is set to Category in the upper right.

2. Click on the link labeled Network and Internet.

3. Click on the link labeled Network and Sharing Center.

4. Click the link on the left-hand side that says Change adapter settings.

5. Double click on the icon labeled Local Area Connection, select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), and then click on Properties to configure your network connection.

6. Now you will have to fill out all of the blank fields in the newly opened TCP/IP Properties window. Click the radio button for Use the following IP address. Your IP address was emailed to you after account activation. Put that IP address in the IP address field. Enter 255.255.255.0 in the Subnet mask field. The default gateway is listed in the same email as your IP address, enter that number in the Default gateway field. Enter 66.51.205.100 into the Preferred DNS server field and 66.51.206.100 into the Alternate DNS server field and then click OK.

7. To complete the setup, click on the OK button in the lower right hand side of the Local Area Connection Properties
