How do I obtain my IP address?

Static IP or Dynamic IP?

The first step in setting up a router is to determine how you obtain your IP address. There are 2 kinds of accounts Static IP accounts and Dynamic IP accounts. Dynamic IP accounts obtain their IP address through a process called PPPoE (Point to Point Over Ethernet). You would have specified the account type that you wanted when you signed up with DSL Extreme. I'll explain how Static and Dynamic IPs work below.

Static IP- A static IP is an IP address that is bound to you. When you have a static IP address your IP never changes. If you have a static IP you would have been provided with am IP address when you signed up for service with DSL Extreme. This IP address is entered into windows TCP/IP stack.

Dynamic IP- A dynamic IP address is an IP obtained via PPPoE. To obtain a dynamic IP address you have to supply a correct user name and password. After supplying the password you will be assigned an IP address from a pool of IP addresses not currently in use. This IP address is yours until you release it by ending the connection.

You will need to know how you get your IP in order to configure your router for that method of obtaining an IP address.
