What is a Dynamic IP Connection

What is a Dynamic IP Connection

Definition:
A dynamic connection is a method used to connect to the Internet. The connection is established using the Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) or the Dynamic Host Control Protocol (DHCP).

How do I make the connection?
Most devices (computers, routers etc) will try to connect via DHCP automatically. For PPPoE connections, you will need to set up your router or, computer (if you don't have a router). To find out which connection type you use, go to your Members page at www.dslextreme.com/members and click on the Setup Instructions link
How does this differ from a Static IP connection?
There is no difference in speed or service between the dynamic or static IP connection; the only difference is how you establish a connection with our network. With a static connection, the IP address that is assigned to you will always stay the same. With the dynamic IP address, upon authenticates with our servers it will assign you a new IP address. Dynamic IP address may change when the connection is being reestablished. A dynamic connection is recommended for customers that do normal Internet functions (i.e. web browsing and email). Customers who wish to host servers or use VPN are recommended to use a static IP address plan.
