Mac OS X Static IP Setup

Mac OS X Static IP Setup

A static IP DSL account is much different than a Dynamic IP (PPPoE) DSL account. With a static IP you always have the same IP address. This means that the numeric value that identifies your computer on the internet (the IP address) is always the same, in oppose to a dynamic IP which changes every time you log in. Since your IP address is fixed you do not need to log in when using a static IP and therefore setup for this type of account is different then a dynamic IP. Follow the directions below to setup Mac OS X (and greater) for a static IP DSL connection.

  1. First click on System Preferences. From the system preferences menu select network.

  1. Now you will be presented with the network setup window. Click on the location pull down and select "New Location" from the pull down menu. You will then be prompted to name the location. Name it anything you like and then click ok.

  1. You will now have returned to the TCP/IP tab of the network setup window. Click on the show drop down and select "Built in Ethernet" from the drop down. Then click on the configure drop down and select "Manually".

  1. Fields will appear for you to enter your IP address, subnet mask, router address, and DNS Server addresses. DSL Extreme will have emailed you your IP address (and other information) by the time your DSL Service becomes active. Enter your IP address, subnet, router address and DNS server addresses into their respective fields (router address is also commonly referred to gateway address). After you have entered all addresses select apply now to complete the configuration.
