How to set up your Efficient SpeedStream 5100-b modem

Tips:

  • Test the power outlet that your DSL modem is plugged into by plugging in a lamp or other electronic device to make sure the outlet is working.
  • Check your Ethernet cable. It may be damaged and need to be replaced.

Check your DSL modem lights
Understanding what the status lights on your DSL modem indicate can help you identify and resolve DSL connection issues.
 

    How to interpret your Efficient SpeedStream 5100-b modem lights
 
 After you have tried power cycling your DSL modem, checking your setup and DSL filters, you should look at the lights on the front of the modem panel to check your connection status.
  1. When powering up the modem, all four lights will be green for approximately 30 seconds. Observing the “Power” light, make sure that the power self-test completes successfully and the light turns a steady green.
  2. Make sure that the modem is synchronized with the ADSL line card at the other end of the circuit by checking the “DSL” light. It may take up to 70 seconds for the modem to synchronize, at which point the “DSL” light will turn to a steady green.
  3. Verify that the modem is properly wired to your computer’s Network Interface Card (NIC) by checking that the “Ethernet” light is a steady green.
  4. Check that your modem is sending and receiving data by observing the “Activity” light. It will vary between steady and blinking green light when the modem is transmitting data.
The following chart explains what the lights on the front panel of the Efficient SpeedStream 5100-b modem indicate. Use this chart below to check the connection status after the initial power up.

Note: The latest version of the Efficient SpeedStream 5100-b modem has a fifth Internet light located on the front panel to indicate whether your modem has established a connection. This version utilizes PPPoE as part of the modem technology to establish and maintain your DSL connection.

 
Configuring the SBC SpeedStream 5100b modem for Bridge Mode.
 
1.      Get the address for browser modem interface off the yellow sticker on the modem or run ipconfig to get the default gateway (make sure that TCP/IP in the local area connection is on “obtain an ip address automatically)
 
2.      Enter the address in the address bar of your browser
 
3.      Leave the user name and pw blank on the next screen
 
4.      Click on the” Advanced button on the left on the same screen Request access code (which is on the yellow sticker)
 
5.      Click on PPP Location and select bridge mode. on the next screen
 
6.      Make sure you save your changes
 
7.      The modem should restart
 
 
Setting up "Bridge Mode”
(This option is used if your ISP uses a static IP address instead of a username and password)
To get to this option, open your web browser, go to http://192.168.0.1/, click Advanced and chose “Bridge Mode”.  Plug the WAN or internet port of the router or firewall to the Ethernet port on the modem and set up a static IP, subnet mask, default gateway and DNS addresses on the WAN side of the router or firewall (Contact the router or firewall manufacturer for instructions). If you want to connect a single pc to the modem then you will need to set up a static IP address, subnet mask, default gateway and primary and secondary DNS addresses on the pc.
"Bridge Mode" Troubleshooting
If you are not using the router setup and are still unable to access the internet, check all physical connections and make sure the NIC properly saved your static IP information.  If you are using a router check all physical connections and make sure that the router properly saved your static IP information.  If all checks out call the ISP to ensure that the IP and DNS addresses are correct.
 
5100/5200 Web Management Interface Problem

  • Overview
I can't get to the Web Management Interface on my 5100 or 5200 modem. When I put http://speedstream in my address or location bar I get a "The page cannot be displayed" page.
  • Solution
The SpeedStream 5100 and 5200 can be configured as either a bridge or a router by the Internet Service Provider (ISP). After being configured as a Bridge there are no user controlled settings so the Web Management Interface is not used. If configured as a Router the Web Management interface should be accessible. Regardless of the configuration the Router documentation is included because some ISPs install a Router upgrade.
Most SpeedStream 5100 are configured as a Bridge (but not always) and most SpeedStream 5200 are configured as a router (but not always).
Bridge or Router?  To see if your product is configured as a Bridge or Router check your Default Gateway. If your Default Gateway is 192.168.254.254 your unit is a Router should have access to the Web Management Interface. Otherwise your product is configured as a Bridge and will not have access to the Web Management Interface.
If your Default Gateway shows that your product is configured as a Router and you cannot access the Web Management Interface contact your ISP for troubleshooting assistance.

Instructions for using winipcfg or ipconfig to determine the Default Gateway
In Windows 95, 98 or ME:
  • Go to "start" then "run", type "winipcfg" in the window and press "Enter"
  • The "IP properties" window will open
  • In that window choose your NIC (Network Interface Card)
  • Your IP address, Subnet Mask and Default Gateway will be displayed.
In Windows NT, 2000, XP:
  • Go to "Start" then "Run", type "cmd" in the window and press "Enter"
  • The DOS command window will open
  • Type "ipconfig" In the DOS command window and press "Enter"
  • Your IP address, Subnet mask and Default Gateway will be displayed.
