1. Product Description
This ADSL modem is a NAT router with a four port 10/100BaseT Ethernet switch, a USB port and 802.11g wireless interface. The Ethernet switch is plug and play and does not require drivers. The USB port is compatible with USB 1.1 and USB 2.0. The USB drivers support Windows98se, Windows ME, Windows2000 and Windows XP. This router provides NAT functions with the option to configure firewall and port forwarding.

2. Does ADSL require installing an additional phone line?
No. ADSL technology provides simultaneous analog voice or fax and DSL data transmission over the same telephone line.

3. How will ADSL affect my regular phone calls?
All the services that are currently available with your telephone service will work with ADSL.

4. Will my ADSL modem connect at the maximum speed available?
Yes. However, this speed is determined by the distance that you are from the Central Office and the condition of your telephone line. The further you are away then the less your ADSL speed will be. In addition your maximum speed is controlled by your Service Provider. Other conditions across the Internet may also affect your download speeds.

5. What is meant by an "always on" connection?
ADSL provides a dedicated connection between your computer and your Service Provider's data network. Because your ADSL connection does not interfere with your telephone, your DSL connection can be left "on" all the time.

6. What is a POTS splitter and do I need one?
A POTS splitter is a device that should be used when the DSL microfilters do not filter all the static, or noise, on the phone line. This can be installed easily where the phone line comes into the house; thus you do not need any further DSL microfilters.

7. I hear noise on my telephone whenever the modem is turned on. Is the modem faulty?
No. The modem is not faulty. This is a condition of ADSL that is handled by using microfilters. To solve this problem, connect a microfilter to your telephone. Every telephone attached to that line requires a microfilter.

8. Why won't my faxing software work with my ADSL modem?
You can not fax through the ADSL modem but you can still use your dialup modem to fax. This is because fax or voice is from 0 - 3.3Khz range and the ADSL bandwidth is typically 35kHz and above. Thus DSL and fax are not in the same bandwidth an do work together. This is why you can use them simultaneously, ADSL using high speed and fax using the dialup modem.

9. Where is the serial number located on the modem?
he number is located on the bottom of your modem below the bar code. It is an alphanumeric sequence of 12 characters and it is always preceded by the characters s/n.

10. Can I TELNET into the modem?
No. The modem does not support this application. It will pass TELNET requests through but it will not respond to them.

11. Sometimes there are error messages on my computer such as "Server Error" or "Connection Error 629." What does this mean?
The modem does not produce any error messages. These are coming from your DSL provider’s software and the DSL provider should be contacted about the problem.

12. What is a PVC and should they be changed?
A PVC or Permanent Virtual Circuit is a point to point dedicated circuit from you to your DSL service provider. PVC's are always on and should not be changed unless instructed to do so by your DSL service provider.

13. The user guide for the modem is not in the box. Where is it located?
Run the setup.exe on the Westell CD then select the Westell User Guide from the menu. This is the user guide for the modem in .pdf format.

14. Is the modem compatible with any Ethernet Network Interface Card?
The modem is compatible with any network interface card that meets the requirements of IEEE 802.3. The Ethernet card can be 10BaseT, 100BaseT, or 10/100baeT.

15. Will the modem operate with a 100BaseT device?
Yes. The modem is compatible with any Ethernet device that meets the requirements of IEEE 802.3. The Ethernet device can be 10BaseT, 100BaseT, or 10/100BaseT.

16. Will the modem work with any computer operating system?
Yes. This modem will work with any operating system.

17. Can I share my ADSL connection?
Yes. This router has an integral 4 port switch.

18. Do I need to install drivers to make the modem work?
Because this modem is a plug and play modem, it requires no special drivers to be installed to run. It operates off of the Network Interface Card installed in the PC.
