Pocket PC setup POP/IMAP

I will be referencing the interface of a Sprint PPC6600 PDA phone which runs PocketPC 2003 Second Edition. If your OS is a different version there may be slight differences but the overall configuration should be similar on other versions.

Go to messaging > tap on Tools > Options On the 'Accounts' tab tap 'New...'

The first screen should ask for your email address, once entered in tap 'Next'

The device may attempt to determine your mail server and username information at this point. You can allow that to continue or simply tap 'skip' to continue manually

The next screen will ask for your name (for display when sending emails), username which should be entered as "[email protected]", and of course password which you can optionally save. Once all this is filled out tap 'Next'

On this screen you will be asked what type of account you will be configuring. If you select POP3 your emails will be removed from the server when they are downloaded to your device. If you select IMAP[4] the emails will remain on the server when retrieved by the device. Typically when I delete emails on the device through an IMAP account I've found the server still retains them and the messages will be downloaded from the server again on the next connect so I would suggest selecting this only if you check the account through a computer as well. Once you've selected the account type the next field is the name it will display to you on your device. After filling in the information tap 'Next' Regardless of which account type you select, the next screen will request the incoming and outgoing server names. For @dslextreme.com email addresses the incoming server is mail.dslextreme.com and the outgoing server name is smtp.dslextreme.com

There is a field referencing a 'domain' name, This isn't always needed but it would be safe to say it should be entered in as dslextreme.com
You may be able to press 'finish' at this point but I would suggest tapping 'Options'. The first screen is the setting for the schedule your device will follow to check mail automatically. I would be careful about turning this option on as it could incur toll charges from your cellular phone carrier during peak times. Once this screen is configured to your liking, tap 'Next'

The first option on this screen is primarily why I wanted you to browse the extra options. Check the box for "My outgoing e-mail server requires authentication". This is typically required to help prevent spam-relays through our servers.

You can check the box "Require SSL connection" if you prefer a secure connection. The next option on this screen is mainly personal preference, if you store a lot of mail you will not want to download or check for changes each time you connect to the server. This option limits how many days back the device will check for mail. Once done tap 'Next'

This screen also helps minimize server connection and downloading time/transfer. The most typical option is "Get message headers only". This means you will only see who the email is from and the subject until you tap to read, it then will download that particular emails content for viewing. Now tap 'Finish' and you will be returned to the 'Options' screen. Tap the check box in the upper right corner to exit Options. Once back on the main messaging screen, tap 'Accounts' and if not already selected, select the new account you created, then tap the icon to the right of the Accounts button which looks like 2 envelopes, this is the Send/Receive button.
