How do I configure Outlook Express to obtain my email?

Note: Outlook express is no longer supported by Microsoft. It is strongly recommended that you upgrade to a newer email client such as Windows Live Mail or Thunderbird.

  1. To configure Outlook Express.
  2. Open outlook express.
  3. Go to the tools menu > accounts and click on the mail tab.
  4. On this tab select Add > mail.
  5. Enter your Display Name. This will be the name displayed when anyone receives email from you. Click 'Next'.
  6. Enter your full DSL EXtreme email address into the input field, then click 'Next'.
  7. On the 'E-mail Server Names' pane, choose either IMAP or POP in the 'My incoming mail server is a' dropdown. Generally, we recommend using IMAP.
  8. For the differences between POP and IMAP refer to this article.
  9. Now you will have to specify your incoming and outgoing email servers. This is how your computer will send and receive mail. Your incoming mail server will be mail.dslextreme.com.
  10. Your outgoing or SMTP server is smtp.dslextreme.com. Click 'Next'.
  11. On the Internet Mail Logon pane, enter your full DSLExtreme username and password. Your username is your email address. Example: [email protected]
  12. Your password is the password that you chose when creating the account. Check the 'Remember password' box
  13. Once you have completed all the fields on this page select next.
  14. A screen informing you that you have completed the setup wizard will display. Select finish to complete the wizard.
  15. This will bring you back to the Internet Accounts screen. Click on and highlight your newly created account and select the ‘Properties’ button.
  16. Go to the ‘Servers’ tab.
  17. Make sure that the ‘Log on using Secure Password Authentication’ checkbox is NOT checked.
  18. Check the ‘My server requires authentication’ checkbox.
  19. Go to the ‘Advanced’ tab
  20. You will see two checkboxes labeled ‘This server requires a secure connection (SSL). Check both checkboxes.
  21. In the ‘Outgoing mail (SMTP) field, enter465 or 587
