How do I configure Outlook Express to obtain my email?
Note: Outlook express is no longer supported by Microsoft. It is strongly recommended that you upgrade to a newer email client such as Windows Live Mail or Thunderbird.
- To configure Outlook Express.
- Open outlook express.
- Go to the tools menu > accounts and click on the mail tab.
- On this tab select Add > mail.
- Enter your Display Name. This will be the name displayed when anyone receives email from you. Click 'Next'.
- Enter your full DSL EXtreme email address into the input field, then click 'Next'.
- On the 'E-mail Server Names' pane, choose either IMAP or POP in the 'My incoming mail server is a' dropdown. Generally, we recommend using IMAP.
- For the differences between POP and IMAP refer to this article.
- Now you will have to specify your incoming and outgoing email servers. This is how your computer will send and receive mail. Your incoming mail server will be mail.dslextreme.com.
- Your outgoing or SMTP server is smtp.dslextreme.com. Click 'Next'.
- On the Internet Mail Logon pane, enter your full DSLExtreme username and password. Your username is your email address. Example: [email protected]
- Your password is the password that you chose when creating the account. Check the 'Remember password' box
- Once you have completed all the fields on this page select next.
- A screen informing you that you have completed the setup wizard will display. Select finish to complete the wizard.
- This will bring you back to the Internet Accounts screen. Click on and highlight your newly created account and select the ‘Properties’ button.
- Go to the ‘Servers’ tab.
- Make sure that the ‘Log on using Secure Password Authentication’ checkbox is NOT checked.
- Check the ‘My server requires authentication’ checkbox.
- Go to the ‘Advanced’ tab
- You will see two checkboxes labeled ‘This server requires a secure connection (SSL). Check both checkboxes.
- In the ‘Outgoing mail (SMTP) field, enter465 or 587
- In the ‘Incoming mail (IMAP) field, enter: 993. If this line says ‘Incoming mail (POP), enter: 995
- Click on the ‘OK’ button
- Onthe ‘Internet Accounts’ pane, click ‘Close’
- Congratulations you have successfully configured outlook express. To receive your email simply click the send/receive button at the top of the screen.
