Setting up IMAP Email in Outlook Express (defunct)
Note: Outlook express is no longer supported by Microsoft. It is recommended that you upgrade to a newer email client. Also, the screen shots below are out of date. Follow the written instructions for proper server names.
Launch Outlook Express. On the Toolbar, click "Tools" and select "Accounts" from the menu.
The Internet Accounts window opens.
Toward the top, right corner, click "Add" and select "Mail" from the menu.
The Internet Connection Wizard launches.
For "Display name", enter your name.
Click "Next" to continue.
Enter your e-mail address for "E-mail address". ([email protected])
Click "Next" to continue.
Set "My Incoming mail server is a..." to IMAP. For "Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) server" enter "mail.dslextreme.com". For "Outgoing (SMTP) server" enter "smtp.dslextreme.com".
Click Next to continue.
Enter your e-mail address as the "Account name" ([email protected]). Enter the e-mail accounts password as "Password". Important: Passwords are case-sensitive. Ensure your Caps Lock is disabled.
Check the "Remember password" box.
Click "Next" to continue.
Click "Finish" to complete the wizard.
Important: You still need to enable SMTP authentication. You'll see how to do this in the following screenshots.
The Internet Accounts window appears.
Highlight the desired account and click "Properties".
Important: Ensure Include this account when receiving mail or synchronizing is checked.
Select the "Servers" tab.
Towards the bottom, left corner check the box "My server requires authentication".
To the right, click the "Settings" button.
Select "Log on using".
Enter your e-mail address as the "Account name" ([email protected]). Enter the e-mail accounts password as "Password". Important: Passwords are case-sensitive. Ensure your Caps Lock is disabled.
Check the "Remember password" box.
Click "OK".
Select the Advanced tab.
Set "Outgoing mail (SMTP)" to "465" and check the "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)" box. Set "Incoming mail (IMAP)" to "993" and check the "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)" box. Set the "Server Timeouts" slider to the far right setting, "Long (5 minutes)"
Click "OK".
Click "Close" on the Internet Accounts screen.
When all of the screens are closed you will be prompted to download the folders from the server. Click "Yes" on the box that pops up.
Ensure that all of the desired folders are selected and click "OK".
