Safari - Browser for Macintosh OS X

Safari - Browser for Macintosh OS X

Safari is a web browser made specifically for Mac OS X by Apple/Macintosh
To configure Safari for Mac OS X, follow these steps:
On the Toolbar, click Safari and select Preferences from the menu.

The Preferences window opens.
Configuring the Home Page:
Click the General icon
to see the screen below.
The Home Page is the page that will open up when you launch Safari.
Home Page = enter the URL of the homepage you'd like to see when you launch Safari.
These settings affect the Internet System Preferences as well.

Enabling Cookies, Java, Plug-Ins, & Popup Blocking:
Click the Security icon
to see the screen below.
The first section is Web Content.
You should Enable JavaScript and Enable Java. Java is an important part of the Internet. Many pages utilize Java; therefore, to enjoy all the Internet has to offer, you should enable Java. Without Java, many pages won't function properly.
You should Enable Plug-ins. Plug-ins allow programs which are not normally part of Safari to act as if they are part of Safari. Programs like RealPlayer, Shockwave, Flash are popular examples.
You can also Block pop-up windows if you like. Pop-ups are those annoying extra (often smaller) windows that appear when you enter many sites. If this feature is not functioning correctly, some websites with login pop-ups may not work properly.
The Second section is Accept Cookies.
Many sites require that you Enable cookies (bank sites and credit unions, for example). If cookies are disabled, you will not be able to access these sites. Please note that you will need cookies enabled to use our home page and web-mail features.

Setting The Proxy :
The most common reason to use Proxies is:
Filtering : Web sites are filtered to stop unwanted sites dealing with smut, violence, etc. from reaching your computer. The proxy address is available from your ISP support center.
To enable the proxy, follow these steps:
Click the Advanced icon
to see the screen below.
You cannot enable the Proxy settings from within Safari.
Instead, you must access the Proxy tab of your Connection in the Network System Preferences.
Click the Change Settings button to open the Proxies tab of the Network System Preferences.

Once the Proxies tab of the Network System Preferences opens, you can enter the Proxy settings.
The proxy address is available from your ISP's support center.
Click Apply Now when finished.

  • Remember, after setting up proxy servers for web site filter, you should clear the History and Cache to get rid of any old web sites still on your computer.

Clearing the History, Cache, and Cookies:
If you are having trouble surfing or can't surf at all, clearing the cache, cookies, and history may help.
The History is a list of web pages you've visited.
The Cache stores all Internet sites you visit on your computer for quicker access later or for viewing offline. This includes images and text. If you are having trouble surfing or can't surf at all, clearing the cache may solve this problem.
Cookies are small files left on your computer by websites to remember your preferences when you return. Many sites require that you enable cookies (bank sites and credit unions, for example). If cookies are disabled, you will not be able to access these sites. Please note that you will need cookies enabled to use our home page and web-mail features.
Clearing all 3 at once:
Safari provides a way to clear the History, the Cache, and the Cookies all at once.
Click the Safari menu, then click Reset Safari, as pictured below.

A confirmation screen appears, making sure you really want to empty all of these folders.
Click Reset to finish emptying the Cache, Cookies, and History.

Clearing ONLY the History:
If you only want to clear the History (and not the Cache or Cookies), do the following:
Click the History menu, then click Clear History, as shown below.

Clearing ONLY the Cache:
If you only want to clear the Cache (and not the Cookies or History), do the following:
Click the Safari menu, then click Empty Cache, as shown below.
Note: If you are having trouble surfing or can't surf at all, clearing the cache may solve this problem.

Clearing ONLY the Cookies:
If you only want to delete the Cookies (and not the Cache or History), go in to the Preferences.
On the Toolbar, click Safari and select Preferences from the menu.

Click the Security icon
to see the screen below.

Click the Show Cookies button to see the screen below.
You should delete cookies periodically. A full cookie folder can decrease browsing performance.
Click the Remove All button to delete all the cookies.
